CES 2026: Robots Take Center Stage as 'Physical AI' Becomes Key Theme

'CES 2026' 공식 개막 '피지컬 AI' 격전 전망

CES 2026 officially kicked off today.
The buzzword at this year's CES is undoubtedly "Physical AI" marking a shift from generative software to intelligence embedded in hardware.
Our Kim Do-yeon takes us to the Las Vegas Convention Center for a closer look.

Meet Atlas.
Hyundai Motor Group's Boston Dynamics unveiled this humanoid robot to kick off CES 2026.
It drew attention as it resembles the body of a human being, but its limbs move much more freely.
The carmaker is focusing on robots specifically Physical AI as the next chapter of its business.

"Robots equipped with physical AI. Robots that perceive the world like we do and work responsibly for us and with us. This is technology that is built for humanity. Technology that supports us, extends our capabilities, makes our work safer, and in some cases, more meaningful."

And Hyundai also won the Best of Innovation award with its MobED.
The autonomous one can deliver items up to 47 kilograms.
Another key Korean company in physical AI is Doosan Robotics.
Together with Maple Advanced Robotics Inc., its Scan and Go robot won awards in both AI and robotics the definition of physical AI.
It moves autonomously and scans surfaces to identify areas that need work.
Here is how the company explained the technology.

"So what we're accomplishing with our physical AI is we're giving the ability for the robots to see, think and act. So the Robot is able to see with our 3D vision. So just like a person it would, it's able to take a decision based on the meaningful Robot movement with our physical AI that's embedded into the system and finally do the work."

And this robot by the company is for sorting out parcels and organizing storage.

"I'm going to put in arirangTV.
Now this robot finds the blocks with the correct letters and completes the word."

And here at CES because Physical AI requires complex hardware component makers are also gaining attention, including companies that make the sensors or develop AI software to process data.
I spoke to one company that provides the LiDAR sensors for robots and vehicles.
After attending C-E-S for a decade in smaller booths the company finally secured a booth on the main show floor this year citing the rise of Physical AI as perfect timing.

"Beyond existing cameras, actually capturing 3D spatial data I believe LiDAR is the new core of the Physical AI era. In that sense, as a core sensor for Physical AI, it is truly an honor and great to be able to exhibit right here in the center of the show."

As for South Korean companies while "Physical AI" is not yet a standalone award category six South Korean companies were explicitly identified as winners in the Robotics category or for robotic solutions centered on this new technology.

Study shows Gen Z would pay more for ESG-friendly brands

Z세대 10명 중 6명 "비싸도 ESG 실천 기업 제품 구매"

Close to 7 out of 10 young Korean consumers are reportedly willing to pay more to purchase products made by socially responsible businesses.
Our correspondent Kim Do-yeon has details.

As ESG practices become more widespread in Korea's economy and society, so-called "value-based consumption"—making purchasing decisions based on personal beliefs and values—is emerging as a key consumer trend among Gen Z.
According to a survey released on Wednesday by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which polled 350 people aged 17 to 28 nationwide on perceptions of ESG management and consumption trends, 66-point-9 percent of respondents said they would "choose products from companies practicing ESG, even if they are slightly more expensive."
This suggests ESG efforts are having a direct impact on brand preference and purchase decisions.
But, experts say it's always important to continue monitoring companies.

"Some companies do a good job with ESG management and even obtain certification for their efforts. However, there are also cases where companies receive such certification but still engage in problematic practices. That’s why it’s important for consumers to look closely and make informed judgments about the companies they support."

The survey also reflected this.
It found that Gen Z is quick to boycott companies involved in social controversies or ethical misconduct.
More than six in 10 respondents said they had "stopped purchasing from a company due to unethical behavior or negative ESG-related issues."
Young people are also highly sensitive to the authenticity of corporate ESG efforts.
In particular, 65-point-4 percent of respondents expressed concern over the issue of “greenwashing.”
This highlights the risk companies face of being shunned by young consumers if their ESG activities are perceived as mere marketing tactics lacking genuine commitment.
